A Polar Summer

Polar bear at zoo in summerOne of the many visual clichés on the Internet is a snapshot of a polar bear, in a zoo, in the summer. We just celebrated the Obon summer holiday here in Japan, which is known for it’s heat and humidity. A friend, interested in photography, is a member of a photography club that gives out monthly assignments to promote skills. The assignment for the month of August was to take photographs at the Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Nagoya. I had some free time, so accompanied her to the zoo. She pointed out this scene of people, maybe a mother and her two daughters, trying to cool a polar bear through the bars of its cage with uchiwa fans. I also took a quick snapshot: a cliché, but it’s fun, and that’s what it’s all about.
